I decided this worked as a mini-essay, so here it is. Also, to be absolutely clear, I am a proudly politically left feminist. Which is precisely why left leaning publications laying into a filmmaker who was one of my biggest inspirations is so upsetting and frustrating. There’s the assumption we’re all in agreement and that his fans are all “bros.” I’m tired of being insulted in these articles by essentially being erased and in personal online disagreements where men mansplain why I’m wrong (the irony escapes them) and women who act as though I’m liar because No True Feminist could honestly like Nolan’s work. As for whatever happened on Boardwalk Empire – I’ve heard so many contradicting stories that I truly don’t care what happened. I’m not pretending he didn’t do anything wrong, but he has stayed friends with the cast which suggest the problem was not what it was made out to be. Other than that belief, I wasn’t there so I have no idea. I’m leaving it there -
Describe an item you were incredibly attached to as a youth. What became of it?
A sweater knitted by a friend of my mother’s especially for me. I was really into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and they had put my favourite turtle on the front (which was Raphael). It was just beautifully made, and there’s even a school photo of me wearing it, beaming happily. If you’ve read my blog, you’ll know my childhood wasn’t great, but that sweater was so precious. I cried when I grew out of it, and we handed it to another family member.
