I decided this worked as a mini-essay, so here it is. Also, to be absolutely clear, I am a proudly politically left feminist. Which is precisely why left leaning publications laying into a filmmaker who was one of my biggest inspirations is so upsetting and frustrating. There’s the assumption we’re all in agreement and that his fans are all “bros.” I’m tired of being insulted in these articles by essentially being erased and in personal online disagreements where men mansplain why I’m wrong (the irony escapes them) and women who act as though I’m liar because No True Feminist could honestly like Nolan’s work. As for whatever happened on Boardwalk Empire – I’ve heard so many contradicting stories that I truly don’t care what happened. I’m not pretending he didn’t do anything wrong, but he has stayed friends with the cast which suggest the problem was not what it was made out to be. Other than that belief, I wasn’t there so I have no idea. I’m leaving it there
